Based on my babysitting experience in the U.S. and Spain, I started “babysitters & company” in the summer of 2010, the first English-speaking service in Japan. In the early days of the company, there were only a few babysitters, and they had to work two or three shifts a day from morning to night, and I myself had to babysit to keep up with them.

The following year, 2011, many babysitters left Japan due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. We were worried about the future but able to continue our business thanks to the gradual return of our babysitters. By 2012, we received more requests from not only local families but also from visitors from all over the world. In 2014, we started our services in Kyoto and Osaka, then in Nagoya since 2019.

Entering 2020, due to the spread of the new coronavirus, requests from foreign families visiting Japan plummeted to almost zero. We mainly guided local families, and the severe business situation continued for about 2.5 years. However, the entry restrictions on foreign tourists were finally lifted in October 2022, and the situation recovered at an alarming speed to the pre-Corona situation.

Some of our foreign babysitters are family members or Japanese spouses working in Japan for a long period of time, while others are in Japan for a short period of time for working holidays, language study, exchange programs, etc. Although you really like them, they will have to leave Japan sooner or later. Thus, if you are planning to use our babysitters on a long-term basis, we would be happy to provide your children with the opportunity to have contact with foreign babysitters from various countries.

We are constantly working with qualified 25-30 babysitters nationwide. They are all very talented and we are so proud of them. Recruiting process is very business like however. We are only hiring less than 10% of applicants or even lesser. Thus, please kindly understand that we are such a small team that we sometimes cannot arrange any of our babysitters for your upcoming request… In order to secure a babysitter for your next night-out or business travel, we highly recommend you to make an official request ahead of time.
